Bees are essential to the health of People and the Planet. Honey and other products have medicinal  properties, and bees’ role  as pollinators makes them essential to the food supply.

There are approximately 20,000 known bee species in the world and more than 4,000 are native to the United  States. Humans can only handle a few, and most species are wild.

In addition to appreciating bees for their honey, in

people began to recognize the importance of bees in  promoting food security and plant and animal diversity.

So, an increase in factors such as pesticide  use and urbanization means that bee numbers are currently declining, negatively impacting many of the world’s ecosystems.

The loss of bees would endanger the supply of honey. But even more important is global food security and  biodiversity. Without her, the world would be a very different place.

 Honey Products

Honey is found in many foods and beverages, but there are also hundreds of health and beauty

products that have honey as a key ingredient. Centuries ago we started using honey for more than just nutrition. We began to understand that honey has healing properties. Honey has been used as a face balm for hundreds of years and is said to cleanse the skin and smooth fine lines. While’s claims are not always accurate, there are many honey-based beauty products one’s shelves  that have been shown to be beneficial to the user.

Bees benefit biodiversity

In addition to the fact that pollination is important for food production, bees also contribute  a lot to the countryside, to gardens and to the enrichment of the landscape in general. Therefore,

Bees are  beneficial to the environment as a whole. They pollinate wildflowers as well as shrubs and trees, thereby improving and ensuring plant biodiversity and the beauty of the landscape and gardens. Some  practical ways  bees can help communities in developing countries

is a bit more unusual. For example, bees help save elephants and protect people in  Africa, by reducing human-elephant conflict.

Why bees are so important to the environment

1. Do we need bees? For what?

It is a simple question – yes. Simply put and bees pollinate our plants, which means they transfer pollen between plants of different sexes to fertilize them, and even between different parts of the same plant. Which helps plants reproduce.  Bees even help plants  and human survive by preventing inbreeding.

 2. What is the main difference between native bees and honey bees?

Native bees do not store nectar and so generally do not produce honey, at least not in large quantities. But European honey bees were brought to Australia about 200 years ago for exactly that reason, to produce honey.

Unfortunately and European honey bees steal food from native birds and animals and invade their homes. But they  pollinate some of our crop and many of our native plants.

3.If native bees do not produce honey, do we  need it?

Native bees pollinate native plants, many of which cannot be pollinated by introduced bees. Some flowers need to vibrate to release pollen. Which many of our native bees can do. This is called “buzzer pollination”. Native bees can even pollinate some introduced plant species.

 4. How many native bees do we have in Australia?

There are approximately 1,600 native bee species in Australia. Including at least 200  in the Adelaide Hills. The number of bee species in the world is constantly growing, 20,000 species are known.
